California CDL Revocation 2026: What You Need to Know Before March 6

Mar 4, 2026 | Compliance, Industry News

The California CDL revocation 2026 will impact approximately 17,000 non-domiciled commercial drivers on March 6, 2026. The DMV is cancelling these licenses after a federal audit found the state improperly issued certain non-domiciled CDLs. As a result, affected drivers must take action before the deadline.

If you hold a non-domiciled CDL or commercial learner’s permit (CLP), you should review your status immediately. Otherwise, you risk losing both your commercial and basic driving privileges.

Who Is Affected by California CDL Revocation 2026?

Specifically, the revocation targets non-domiciled drivers whose CDL expiration date extends beyond the expiration of their legal presence documents.

The DMV mailed letters to impacted drivers. In those letters, the agency outlined three possible outcomes:

  • The DMV will cancel non-domiciled CLPs and pending CDL applications.

  • The DMV will cancel non-domiciled CDLs issued outside state or federal compliance.

  • The DMV will allow properly issued CDLs to remain valid until their expiration date.

Therefore, drivers should confirm which category applies to them as soon as possible.

What Drivers Must Do Now

If the DMV cancels your CDL, you will also lose your basic driver’s license privileges. However, you still have options.

Before March 6, you can visit a DMV field office and voluntarily downgrade to a basic driver’s license. By doing this early, you may avoid complications.

After March 6, you must visit a DMV field office to reinstate your basic driving privileges. Delays may occur, so plan accordingly.

What Motor Carriers Should Do

Motor carriers must act proactively. First, review your roster for non-domiciled drivers. Then, confirm each driver’s status before the deadline.

If you participate in the Employer Pull Notice (EPN) Program, you will automatically receive revocation alerts. Even so, you should not wait for a notification to begin reviewing records.

In addition, review your compliance processes to reduce risk exposure. For example, download the Driver File Compliance Timeline from our Information and Downloads page to help you keep driver files current and audit-ready.
